What Are Story Games?
Stories you play with your friends.
Grab your friends. Meet someplace comfy, like a living room or around a kitchen table. Have some snacks. And get ready for something exciting and new! Story games don’t require much to play – usually just pencils, paper, and dice (some use tokens, playing cards, index cards or other little trinkets).
Playing is like acting in a movie with no script. We write the movie as we play it. A set of rules help us structure our participation. Using our imaginations we explore new worlds, overcome challenges, and have adventures. The game elements help twist the story in unexpected and thrilling directions.
First we pick what kind of story we want to create, and what themes and situations we want to explore with it. Then we create characters to focus the story on. And then we play! When we’re done, we will have experienced a story as entertaining as any movie or book. A story we made together.
Story Game Are Social, Smart, and Creative!
Social: Story games promote collaboration, build confidence, and bring friends closer together.
Smart: Story games promote reading, problem solving, and strategic thinking.
Creative: You are a creative person. More creative that you think. Artists don’t own creativity. It’s for everyone! Story games help you be more creative.
How Do They Work?
Story games provide rules to inspire, fuel creativity, and bring a group’s ideas together. The rules help structure and guide you. And different story games have different rules to help you make different kinds of stories.
